Wakefield Health (formerly
Wakefield Regional Health Service) is one of seven health regions established
within country South Australia in 1996. Wakefield Health is incorporated
under the South Australian Health Commission Act which is administered
by the Department of Human Services. The Minister for Health is the Hon
John Hill MP.
The Region is managed by a Regional Health Board incorporated under
the South Australian Health Commission and essentially has three core
responsibilities:
- to plan
for the provision of public health services;
- to distribute
funds to health service providers; and
- to monitor
the performance of health units in ensuring that services are provided
appropriately.
Wakefield
Health covers a large and diverse region (approximately 24,000 sq km)
including the areas of Barossa & Light, Gawler, Lower North and Yorke
Peninsula of South Australia with an estimated population of 103,000 people.
Within Wakefield Region there are eight incorporated health services managing
a total of five community health services and thirteen hospitals.
